What Causes Flickering Car or Truck Lights

what causes flickering car or truck lights

Mercedes-Benz of Boerne can help you identify what causes flickering car or truck lights.

If you observe your lights dimming while driving, it’s probably due to a battery that is failing. In the rare case when it’s not the battery, there are other common trouble areas that may be responsible for the issue. Whether it’s your car battery or something else, you should get the problem diagnosed and fixed ASAP. If your car lights aren’t functioning correctly, you might become a danger to yourself and other drivers.
The three areas flickering car lights generally happen are:

  • Lights on the Dashboard
  • Interior overhead lights
  • Headlights

Since the battery is the most convenient component to diagnose, this is where most of us will look first. If the battery is on its way out, bring it to us so we can properly diagnose the problem and get the right OEM battery for your vehicle. While most cases result from a failing battery, there are other factors to consider.

Bad bulbs or fuses

Bad bulbs or fuses

If your battery isn’t the cause of your flickering car lights, it might be a failing bulb or a bad fuse. Light bulbs are an easy fix and present an opportunity to upgrade to new energy-efficient LED bulbs.
If your car has a bad fuse, you may be looking at a more significant problem than you had originally realized. In most cases, a fuse only fails when there is too much electrical current runs through it. As an example, if the anti-lock brakes are installed with a 10amp fuse, and the fuse receives more than 10amps of electricity, the fuse would fail. In this situation, a blown fuse would cause your anti-lock brakes to fail. If there is a fuse that continues to fail, bring it in so we can thoroughly diagnose the bigger, potentially more dangerous problem.

Alternator

Lights flickering on the dash could also be one of the signs that your alternator is going bad. Think of it like this, you start your vehicle with power from the battery, but to keep your car running, the power is supplied by your alternator. If you have an older car with halogen lights, you may notice them get dimmer with a dying alternator. For new cars equipped with LED or HID lighting, they may flicker or stop working altogether.

Headlight switch going bad

A failing light switch, whether it’s the interior dimmer or the headlight switch, should be considered when you have flickering car lights. In some uncommon situations, just replacing a worn-out switch could solve the flickering light problem, especially in vehicles with excessive mileage or older cars. If your car is new, there’s a possibility it could be symptoms of a more serious issue with the vehicle’s electrical system.
Understanding these problems can seem overwhelming, so if you notice any issues with the lights flickering on your vehicle, bring it in immediately. Our trained technicians will do a thorough investigation and give you options for fixing the flickering lights.
